Description

Delicious homemade classic pretzels that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • 4 tbsp melted butter
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, brown sugar, and yeast. Let sit until foamy (about 5 minutes).
  2. Stir in flour and kosher salt until a rough dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled (about 1 hour).
  4. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes and twist them into classic pretzel shapes.
  5. Boil water with baking soda in a pot. Briefly dip each pretzel before placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Brush melted butter over each pretzel and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake at 450°F (232°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • Ensure water temperature is accurate for the yeast to activate.
  • Experiment with toppings like sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning for variety.
